Colour code from day one

A home lab that starts without a colour-coding scheme ends up with a scheme that nobody chose deliberately. Blue leads for uplinks, red for management ports, black for standard workstation connections, green for storage network; the exact scheme matters less than applying it consistently from the first cable you run.
